Review of 2, 4 and 6 Drive Desktop NAS Units

The Netgear ReadyNAS Pro family brings reliable, affordable and simple solutions for data management to small offices and remote locations. Netgear ReadyNAS has long been our favorite for SMB network storage and these latest units exemplify everything we like in a NAS.

The new ReadyNAS Pro series of 2, 4 and 6 hot swap drive NAS devices are in the same line as the ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition that was only available in 6 drive capacity before. The new Pro series improves upon that unit in performance – there was little else to improve upon – but the price point of this quality is now lower in that you can opt for a smaller chassis.

The new ReadyNAS Pros are an affordable business-class platform for shared storage in VMware® and Hype+r-V™ environments. The Pro can also deliver reliable disk-based backup capacity for locations looking to reduce tape dependence, with scalable replication
options for remote site data protection.

ReadyNAS Pro 2, ReadyNAS Pro 4, ReadyNAS Pro 6 are now all available as diskless models and preconfigured with 1TB, 2TB or 3TB hard drives. (See table below for model numbers)

Simple Administration

The nice thing about Netgear ReadyNAS Pro NAS devices for the small office is that you get top quality, enterprise grade hardware, features and benefits without having to hire an expensive IT administrator to setup and use it.

Don’t hire more staff to handle smaller sites, and stop depending on part-time or non-professional IT staff to get the job done. The Pro family is a simple to install appliance and can be managed from any network location.

How The Pro Series Is Better Than Consumer NAS

The Pro family delivers business-class data protection and management that’s a step above consumer grade products. A complete set of backup tools is included with every system.
• Embedded hybrid cloud archive for automatic offsite data protection
• The industry’s first standard 5-year warranty
• Enterprise-grade SATA drives provide up to twice the reliability as desktop drives (on 4 & 6 bay units)
• The ReadyNAS Replicate software option for simple backup, restore and disaster recovery
job creation and management across systems and sites

How ReadyNAS Pro NAS Devices Integrate With Your Business

netgear-readynas-pro-integration-with-business

A full suite of storage protocols means any new application can access the capacity it needs, when it needs it. No costly system architects or maintenance are necessary.

And when it is time to enhance features, easy-add-on applications can be installed without command line complexity.

Integration:

  • Symantec Backup Exec – ReadyNAS Pro is the only system in its class to officially support the Symantec RALUS agent. Improve performance in your existing Symantec environment up to 120%!
  • Acronis® Backup and Recovery – Trial licenses of Acronis’ image backup software are included with all Pro family systems. Simplify disaster recovery in physical and virtual environments with disk-based backup tools.
• Egnyte® Office Local Cloud – Hybrid cloud file sharing options are available for offsite workers. Access files from outside the office as if users were on the LAN, and keep files synchonized seamlessly.

Big Business Benefits With Small Business Affordability

Truly affordable small office storage is not typically available from traditional enterprise vendors. The ReadyNAS Pro family scales with business needs and budget constraints, and cuts license, installation, maintenance and staffing needs down upon installation.

  • ReadyNAS Vault™ – 100 GB for 12 months of online archive capacity is included with every model. Recover files from any browser location; save multiple archive versions and securely transfer data offsite without new agents, software licenses or personnel.
  • ReadyNAS Replicate – Move data between sites, to a central location or in any direction required with this central management tool. Eliminate scripting, command-line and individual job management. Simpify capturing data from the edge of the network and bring it safely home to the core.
  • ReadyNAS Remote – An automatic VPN is built into every ReadyNAS Pro. No firewall configuration, extra appliances or licenses are necessary to access files as if they were local – even from outside of the network.

Distinctions Between ReadyNAS Pro Models

The new ReadyNAS Pro Family are essentially identical in features with just a few exceptions (See Chart also):

  • The ReadyNAS Pro 2 comes with an external power adapter (or mini brick), the Pro 4 and Pro 6, on the other hand, have an internal power supply connected with just a simple power cord.
  • The ReadyNAS Pro 2, being the last of the series to be released, has a USB 3.0 capable front USB port in addition to 2 rear USB 2.0 ports. The 4 and 6 are USB 2.0 all around.
  • The Pro 2 is not equipped with a front display. The Pro 4 has an LCD display and the Pro 6 an OLED front display.
  • Since the Pro 2 has the capacity for just two internal SATA hard drives, RAID0 and RAID1 are the only RAID levels supported. The default X-RAID2 will perform RAID1 mirroring, in essence. The Pro 4 adds RAID5 capability, the Pro 6 adds a RAID6 in Flex-RAID or X-RAID2 with dual redundancy option.
  • Read/write performance is within a few percentage points on all 3 models, but the CPU is different (all Intel Dual Core). Pro 2: Atom 1.8Ghz; Pro 4: 1.66; Pro 6: 2.8Ghz Pentium. NOT a misprint, the Pro 2 is actually the newest and has a faster processor than the Pro 4.
  • Pro 4 and Pro 6 use Enterprise class hard drives on prepopulated models, the Pro 2 uses Consumer class.
